The Orange Grove by Kate Murdoch delivers intrigue and romance against the beautiful yet unforgiving backdrop of eighteenth century France.  Though this novel is on the shorter side at just over 250 pages, it does not fail to capture the intricacies of household politics and court life at that time.  The vivid imagery and lush landscapes make it clear that Murdoch has a background in art.  She has masterfully crafted a tale of several well-developed and captivating characters who’s lives are interwoven around a common person.  The twists and turns will keep you on the edge of your seat, while being equally entertained by the drama and gossip.  What seems to be mere petty squabbles turns into devious plans that risk life and limb.  If you find yourself seeking a historical fiction that is more than just palaces and pretty dresses, The Orange Grove is sure to be a great choice.
