After tricking the king, Tempest has finally won her long sought-after prize – a place on the king’s council – but it comes with a steep price. The king wishes for her to once again infiltrate the Jester’s Dark Court and crush the remaining rebellion. Stuck between her duty to her kingdom and her duty to what is right, she throws herself into the assignment, determined to discover her true enemies.

This book gave me whiplash ala Edward Cullen’s mood swings. I’m honestly not sure how I felt about it. I like the world and the premise. I even like Tempest, though she’s as mercurial as her name might suggest. Unfortunately, this book fell flat for me. It suffers from second-book syndrome and feels like a placeholder. Not much occurred to further the plot in my opinion. If anything, this book serves as character development, though I’m still confused by the romance. (Romances?) I think, perhaps, there is so much going on, so many different story threads, that following each for just a little felt anticlimactic. Hopefully, there is more action in the third installment.

The saving grace for this audiobook was the narrators. Cris Dukehart and Zachary Webber do a great job. They made it easy to push through to the end.

Thank you to Frost Kay for providing a free audiobook to review.
