Adelaide Belanger longs to use the magical energy within her, but revealing her…

Prince of Shadow and Ash is a heart-warming, yet thrilling debut novel from author Selina R. Gonzalez.  Picking up where the novella Servant, Mercenary, Brother left off, we are immediately plunged back into Gonzalez’s medieval-inspired fantasy world ripe with mythical creatures and magic.  Though a “classic” fantasy setting, I appreciated the departure from conventional social roles marked by a diverse cast of characters.  I love Regulus, the ex-mercenary with a heart of gold, and Adelaide, the badass, knife-wielding maiden that will do anything to protect those she loves.  They are both so endearing and loyal that I found myself routing for them from the very beginning.  Though their relationship happens quickly, it felt genuine and not forced.  Their supporting characters are equally compelling.  While the romance between Regulus and Adelaide is the star of the show, the strong friendships and family ties are the backbone that holds it together.

The pacing of this story was perfection.  I was thoroughly entertained by the romantic tension that wound its way into many scenes.  Though very focused on the romance, there is plenty of action and adventure mixed in to fill out the plot.  I loved that we jumped from dragon slaying to banquets to jousts to dances.  The two distinct villains certainly kept me on my toes.  I never knew what form the next strike would take.

The ending of this book gave me hope and then made me want to crush it in anger.  I’m glad I have an ARC of the sequel waiting for me or I would be very upset.  If you’re not so lucky, you don’t have long to wait.  Book 2, Staff of Nightfall, will be available on July 15, 2020.

I highly recommend this book for anyone that enjoys Fantasy Romance or classic fantasies of knights, mages, and dragons.
