It’s the first Monday in September! Where has the year gone? I wish I could say that this month started off as strong as August, but I can’t. I have been reading, but I’m not finishing books as quickly as I would like. Mostly, I’ve been prepping to go back to work and getting everything ready for baby Asher, who should be arriving in about a month.

Anyway, it’s Monday and I want to know what you’re reading! This meme began on J Kaye’s blog and then was hosted by Sheila at Book Journey, who then passed it on to Kathryn at The Book Date. It’s a chance to check out what others are reading and maybe (who are we kidding? probably) add to your tbr. All you have to do to participate is let us know what you finished reading recently, what you’re reading now, and what you plan to read next.

I was pleasantly surprised by Ever the Hunted by Erin Summerill, which was my Mom & Me buddy read for August. I think it had enough twists and interesting characters to keep it from falling into the typical YA fantasy trap. The only odd thing about it was the ending. It felt like the ending of a stand alone novel not the first in a series. However, I understand that authors aren’t always signed on for the full series, so it may have been a necessary evil.

Rating: 5 out of 5.

A Kingdom of Flesh and Fire by Jennifer L. Armentrout was one of my most anticipated reads of September. It is the sequel to From Blood and Ash, which released earlier this year. This book did not disappoint! I highly recommend this series if you are a fan of the Paranormal Romance genre. If you’d like to read my full review, click here.

Ever the Brave by Erin Summerill is the second book in the Clash of Kingdoms trilogy. I have to say, unfortunately, this installment feels a lot more “tropey”. I do still love the characters and I hope it is just my jaded, YA-reading brain that is anticipating predictability and not how things actually play out.

Yes, I’m still reading Ninth House. As I’ve mentioned, I usually go through audiobooks quite quickly since I listen to them on my way to work. However, I’ve been off for a couple weeks, so my listening is few and far between. Although this feels far less fantastic than her other work, I am still enjoying it. It took me a while to get into it, but I think that’s a me problem because the pacing is engaging. Anyway, I only have an hour left (so really a half hour). It felt like it was wrapping up when I still had 3 hours remaining, but now it’s come unraveled again. I guess I hope we get some answers before the next book.

The forest is a dangerous place, where siren song lures men and women to their deaths. For centuries, a witch has harvested souls to feed the heartless tree, using its power to grow her domain. When Owen Merrick is lured into the witch’s wood, one of her tree-siren daughters, Seren, saves his life instead of ending it. Every night, he climbs over the garden wall to see her, and every night her longing to become human deepens. But a shift in the stars foretells a dangerous curse, and Seren’s quest to become human will lead them into an ancient war raging between the witch and the king who is trying to stop her.

I am also reading an e-ARC of Into the Heartless Wood by Joanna Ruth Meyer, which is expected to release January 12, 2021. I’m only about 20% into it, but, thus far, I am loving the writing style and the folklore-ish qualities.

While Kira faces her own horrors, Earth and its colonies stand upon the brink of annihilation. Now, Kira might be humanity’s greatest and final hope . . .

To Sleep In a Sea of Stars by Christopher Paolini releases next week. Since I have a NetGalley ARC, I will definitely need to start it next to get my review in before pub date. It’s also a beast at almost 900 pages long. Wish me luck y’all.

Let me know what you’re currently reading in the comments!

  1. I hope you’ll love To Sleep in a Sea of Stars as much as I do! I listened to the audiobook on NetGalley and was drawn in so quickly. I don’t even like space stories! This one though immediately jumped to my all time favorites!

    1. Glad to hear it! I probably should have gotten the audiobook, but I’m really looking forward to reading it.
